Long Weekend in Vilnius, Lithuania

Looking for the perfect European city break? You want rich history and unique experience? You crave quirky modern culture and dream of fairytale landscapes? If so, a long weekend in Vilnius, Lithuania should top your list.

This vibrant capital is full of surprises. You can wander through a UNESCO-listed Old Town, grab a craft beer in a former prison made famous by Netflix or even float directly above the city center in a hot air balloon.

Are you a history buff? A pop-culture enthusiast? An adventure seeker? No matter your travel style, here is how to spend an unforgettable long weekend in Vilnius.

Day 1: Old Town Charm and Sky-High Adventures

Start your Vilnius itinerary right in the heart of the city. The Vilnius Old Town is one of the largest surviving medieval old towns in Northern Europe and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1994.

Morning: Wander the Cobblestone Streets

Grab a coffee and a traditional meal and get lost in the winding streets. Make sure to visit:

  • Cathedral Square: The historical epicenter of the city. Don’t forget to find the “Stebuklas” (Miracle) tile, spin around three times, and make a wish!
  • Gediminas’ Tower: Take the funicular (or hike) up to this iconic brick tower for your first panoramic view of the city.
  • The Republic of Užupis: Cross the river into this self-declared bohemian republic. It has its own constitution, an anthem, and an incredible street art scene. Check out our full guide to hidden street art in Eastern Europe.

Evening: A Hot Air Balloon Ride Over the Capital

Here is a fact that surprises many travelers: Vilnius is one of the only European capitals that allows hot air balloons to fly directly over the city center.

Floating over the terracotta roofs of the Old Town, the winding Neris River, and lush green parks is a surreal experience. Flights usually take off from Vingis Park near sunset. You’ll see the contrast between centuries-old church spires and the modern business district skyscrapers, all while experiencing the quiet thrill of drifting wherever the wind takes you.

Day 2: Pop Culture, Prisons, and Local Flavors

Vilnius has a dark, fascinating history that has recently been repurposed into thriving cultural hubs. Day two is all about experiencing the city’s creative edge.

Morning: Lukiškės Prison 2.0 (The Stranger Things Connection)

For 115 years, Lukiškės Prison held criminals, political prisoners, and exiles. It survived World Wars and Soviet occupations before finally closing its doors as a confinement facility in 2019.

Today, it has been reborn as Lukiškės Prison 2.0, a cultural hub housing over 250 artists and creators. Pop culture fans will immediately recognize it: this is where season 4 of Netflix’s hit series Stranger Things was filmed!

You can book an official tour to walk through the cell blocks, learn about its grim history, and see the exact spots where Hopper was imprisoned. Afterwards, grab a craft beer in the prison courtyard, which now hosts concerts, food trucks, and festivals. You can learn more about booking tours on the Go Vilnius official website.

Evening: Dive into Lithuanian Cuisine

After escaping prison, treat yourself to traditional Lithuanian comfort food. Head to a cozy tavern in the Old Town and order Cepelinai (heavy, satisfying potato dumplings stuffed with meat) or cold beetroot soup (Šaltibarščiai), famously bright pink and incredibly refreshing on a warm day.

No Lithuanian feast is complete without exploring the local drink culture, which locals are immensely proud of. Lithuania is famous for its unique farmhouse ale, brewed using ancient traditions and local yeast strains that give it an earthy flavor entirely distinct from mainstream European beers. For something even more historic, order a glass of Midus, a traditional Lithuanian mead (fermented honey liquor). With roots dating back to the 11th century, it is often infused with herbs or berries and acts as the perfect sweet aperitif after a heavy meal. If you prefer a non-alcoholic option, try Gira, a slightly sweet and refreshing fermented drink made from dark rye bread. Just don’t forget to look your companions in the eye before your first sip and say “Į sveikatą!” (Cheers!).

Day 3: A Fairytale Escape to Trakai

No long weekend in Vilnius is complete without a short half-day trip to Trakai, located just 45 minutes from Vilnius by train or bus.

Trakai Castle

Explore Trakai Island Castle

Rising straight out of the waters of Lake Galvė, the 14th-century Trakai Island Castle looks like it was plucked from a Disney movie. It is the only island castle in Eastern Europe.

You can spend a few hours walking across the wooden bridges, exploring the museum inside the gothic brick walls, and learning about the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

Unique Activities in Trakai

  • Rent a paddleboard or rowboat: The best views of the castle are from the water. Renting a boat to paddle around the island is an absolute must.
  • Taste Karaim Cuisine: Trakai is home to the Karaims, a Turkic ethnic group brought to Lithuania centuries ago to serve as castle guards. You must try their traditional dish, the Kibinai (a savory, meat-filled pastry), at one of the local lakeside restaurants.

Is a Long Weekend in Vilnius Enough?

Three days is the perfect amount of time to soak in the highlights of Vilnius and its surrounding areas. It is highly walkable, surprisingly affordable, and lacks the overwhelming tourist crowds found in cities like Prague or Paris.
