If you’re visiting Athens and want a quick getaway to experience real island life, take a 1-night independent trip to Aegina with a day visit to Moni Island. Yes, there are plenty of organized tours that will take you there – but most pack people onto crowded boats and rush through the day.
Trust us: going independently is a completely different experience. It’s easy, flexible, affordable, and unforgettable.

Getting from Athens to Aegina
Leave Athens early in the morning from Piraeus port (easy metro access). The ferry ride to Aegina takes about 1.5 hours, depending on the ferry.
When you arrive, I highly recommend renting a motorbike for the most freedom. It costs around €20 / 24 hours, and allows you to explore every corner of the island.
If you don’t want to drive, taxis and local buses are available.
Exploring Aegina
Spend the day discovering beaches, small villages, and viewpoints – and most importantly:
Eat as many pistachios as possible.
Aegina is famous worldwide as the pistachio capital of Greece, and you’ll find everything from gelato and pastries to pistachio butter and liquor.
Sightseeing you shouldn’t miss
- 🏛 Temple of Aphaia – older than the Parthenon, beautifully preserved with amazing sea views
- ⛪ Monastery of Agios Nektarios – spiritual, impressive, and important to many pilgrims
- 👁 Paleochora (Medieval Ghost Town) – abandoned Byzantine town full of history
- 🏘 Perdika Village – beautiful fishing village and the port to Moni Island, perfect for sunset dinner

Evening Magic
Once the last day-tour boats leave, Aegina becomes incredibly peaceful. The harbor lights, calm streets, and quiet restaurants make the island feel completely different – relaxed, romantic, and authentic.
Have dinner by the sea when the port is calm and most tourists are gone. This is the moment when you’ll be happy you stayed overnight.
Day Two: Moni Island
Wake up early and head to Perdika port.
Take the first small boat to Moni, usually around 9:00 AM. Tickets cost about €3 per person and the ride takes 10-15 minutes. You can park your motorbike nearby.
What to expect
Imagine arriving almost alone – being among the first people on a natural island with crystal-clear water and wild animals like deer and peacocks wandering freely. It feels surreal and magical.
There’s one beach bar where you can buy drinks or snacks. The rest of the island is untouched by nature, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, or hiking.

What to Pack
Nothing complicated – this is a simple minimalist trip.
- Comfortable clothes
- Swimwear
- Towel
- Toiletries
- Passport / ID (needed for motorbike rental)
- Sunscreen
- Cash (helpful in small cafés)
- Water shoes (optional for rocky spots)
